OK. If I were a real journalist I couldn’t write this. I’d have to make all the phone calls, all of which I expect would turn up no real information and a few “no comments”. But I’m just blahgging here, so what the hey.
The “One More Thing” from Cingular…er, AT&T and Apple
A Day At Macworld
I spent the day at Macworld today so you didn’t have to. No, no. No thanks are needed. It’s just who I am.
I made the trek into The City with several goals in mind: I wanted to talk to the Quickbooks guys about the issues in moving from Windows to Mac; to talk to the QB and FileMaker Pro guys about ways to move data back and forth between those apps; to check out some project management packages, see the Leopard and Microsoft Office 2008 demos, and to see how close I could get to the iPhone.
Apple iPhone Second blush
Are you sick of reading about the iPhone yet? I’m planning on trekking into The City tomorrow and hope to get a first hand look, but spent plenty of time last night reading the specs, watching the keynote video and going through the flash presentation that Apple posted. After the first blush of excitement several questions popped up that will require some answers between now and June when this puppy actually goes on sale.
Here’s my short list:
Creativity Ritual Crutches
After leaving a real job for the world of consulting and freelance work I found myself sometimes craving the workplace. It wasn’t the work or the watercooler or the constant interaction that I missed really, but more the complete change in rituals.
At the office I had dropped into several habits for my workday. Each day I arrived about the same time, dropped into my teams’ offices to check for issues or see if help was needed. Grabbed a cup of coffee, sat down and started through my email…you know, what you might call the rut. But I missed that stuff nonetheless.
Apple Plan for 10% Market Share
Apple has languished in the 3-5% market share area for many years now. That would be in the PC market, not the portable entertainment device market that remains dominated by Apple. Apple’s fans don’t seem to mind, and in fact see it as something of a status symbol. But I think that Steve Jobs and Apple have their eyes set on something more. How does Apple get to 10% market share.
Around Our Blogroll
We list just a few links in the lefthand sidebar of every page you view on this site. We could list a bazillion sites, as link trading is a great way to build awareness for LostInaFog, but have instead chosen to add new links cautiously. Some of these linked blogs also link to us, and some don’t. When approached to exchange links, I’ll happily add the link, actually read that linked blog for a while and then either keep it or dump it depending on my take on the content. I can see that some of you folks do check out those links occasionally, but thought I’d highlight a couple today that you might enjoy.
A Hard Lesson in Ubiquitous Connections
I’m generally pretty happy with my Internet service from Comcast. It costs too much ($45/month) but I get speeds that range between 2-3X T1–not too shabby. That’s generally fast enough for any content I find on the web. I’ve got the home network set up so I can use my PowerBook anywhere I want to be. It works out just fine.
Apple April Announcements–Updated
You know its coming…Apple’s 30th Anniversary is April 1st and we all expect (Steve as much as said so) some cool anouncements in early April. Of course I have no idea, no inside information, no tipsters. But I do have a brain and some of the next steps seem obvious. So here’s what’s coming…
New iBook replacement–this will be the low end of the MacBook line as the iBook and PowerBook lines merge into the new name. It’ll be single core and sounds like it will carry a 13″ screen. Likelihood is 90%.
Miscellaneous Goodness
I’ve been storing a few things up in my brain that need to be dumped out somewhere, and its either here or the floor of the bathroom at the hole-in-the-wall bar down the street. And last time I did THAT, well, lets just say that I found out there are other uses for that mop in the corner…
Weight Loss Plan…um….needs better plan

Well this whole set point and diet thing has become highly annoying. I do my workouts at the Y 3 times a week to the tune of 800-1000 calories burned. But I’ve been slacking everywhere else. I haven’t been using that cool program on my Palm to monitor my foods. I know, I know….but when the diet is working and the pounds are falling off it all works just fine and is sort of self-motiviating. But then the body takes a weight loss vacation and I start thinking, why not have that pizza if the weight isn’t coming off anyway, and then, well, you know.
AT&T Chief Sticks Head Up His Ass (surprised to find out its his own)
UPDATED
The Financial Times ran this story on Monday quoting AT&T Chairman Whitacres warnings that SOMEBODY is going to have to pay for the bigger and bigger pipes needed for all this internet traffic, and it sure as hell isn’t going to be him. Man, this guy needs to get out a bit more.
First Stab at Favorite Stuff page is up…
I finally got around to building that My Favorite Stuff page. It now includes the Mac, iPod and Mac Software links along with the Diet & Exercise tools. I’ll add more categories and keep it updated. Check there for links that help support lostinafog.com. Feedback welcome.
